Using an instrument called a microkeratome, your surgeon will create a flap on the surface of your cornea. This flap will provide access to the tissue underneath, which will be reshaped with a laser. Good candidates for LASIK are between 18 and 55 years old and have sufficiently thick corneal tissue to allow for the procedure. Those over the age of 55, or those with thin corneas, dry eye syndrome, early signs of cataracts or other conditions may be better candidates for all-laser LASIK or another treatment.
